The kidneys whole and in section, showing the cortex, the pyramids and the vessels that enter at the hilum. Drawn by N. H. Jacob for J.-M. Bourgery’s Traité complet de l’anatomie de l’homme, Paris, 1831–1854.
The print
Heavy ring-spun cotton, 207 g/m², dyed after sewing, so it comes soft and a little lived-in. Printed big on the back, about 22 × 34 cm, in sepia ink on light colours and bone ink on dark ones, captioned THE KIDNEYS in capitals, with its French name, Reins. The plate is in the public domain, printed from the scan in the Wellcome Collection.
