The liver opened to show the portal vein and its branches spreading through the tissue, every vessel traced. Drawn by N. H. Jacob for J.-M. Bourgery’s Traité complet de l’anatomie de l’homme, Paris, 1831–1854.
The print
Heavy ring-spun cotton, 207 g/m², dyed after sewing, so it comes soft and a little lived-in. Printed small on the chest, about 9 × 13 cm, in sepia ink on light colours and bone ink on dark ones, captioned THE LIVER in capitals, with its French name, Foie. The plate is in the public domain, printed from the scan in the Wellcome Collection.
